Beat your heart out

Brody Dalle has a set of vox that reminds me of sweaty, packed VFW punk rock shows. The former Distillers frontwoman is back with a new band (Spinnerette) and a soon to be released 4-song EP, “Ghetto Love”. It leans more on the rock side, which makes me miss the scream-o stuff but it’s early on, and they’re unsigned so the future looks optimistic.

Legendary rock club celebrates 20 years!

The Casbah first opened its doors in 1989 and like they say, the rest is history. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Morphine, Weezer, Jesus Lizard, Mudhoney, Rollins, X, The Cult, MGMT, White Stripes, Death Cab For Cutie, The Arcade Fire and Rocket From The Crypt have all rocked the Casbah. The San Diego landmark is an underground staple, embraced by rock-n-roll advocates from coast to coast. This January, Casbah celebrates 20 years with a month-long, much anticipated string of anniversary shows. Bands whose early Casbah gigs infiltrated an entire movement will reunite to pay homage to the local institution. Tickets and full calendar listings here.

Thoughtpile

Herman Miller makes beautiful chairs that I can’t afford. However, their new website, “Thoughtpile” provides a unique opportunity to voice your opinion and potentially win an expensive new chair. It’s a super clean, crafty site that reinforces the popularity of micro-blogging.

Packaging makes all the difference

Nick Hornby said it best, “The making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art.” It’s also an indie rock dating ritual. There’s a ridiculous amount of thought that goes into it so you don’t want to screw it up with a shitty looking CD cover. Look, this is a passion project that probably took up your entire evening so make it count on all fronts. [via boing boing]
