This one’s for the neighborhood

GOOD Magazine has taken the initiative to declare this Sunday April 25th the 1st annual Neighbor Day, a day of local community and getting to know your neighbors. Besides the fact that I’m an instant fan of non-traditional holidays, I think it’s awesome to celebrate something that makes our lives so very rich. It’s so easy to get involved that you won’t even have an excuse – just throw a potluck, support local independent businesses or finally introduce yourself to that person you’ve passed by every day for the past 3 years without knowing their name. For extra credit we’d like you to vouch for the San Diego neighborhood that rocks hardest and tell us why. The best response we receive within a week from today will get a shirt reppin’ their ‘hood in the colors of their choice. Now, let’s see some love for your neighborhood!

Solid Gold.

Check the new headwear from designer Benny Gold. I love these hats not just because they’re damned good lookin’ but also because they really exude the kind of quality we at HM appreciate big time. It’s rare to find products in this mass produced consumer wasteland that let you feel good about your purchase, but these really do.

Brown’s Brewing makes me crave a pint!

From a package design standpoint, it’s not groundbreaking but on principle (and namesake), I had to love Brown’s Brewing. Plus, it’s making me thirsty! Who wants a pint? [via Lovely Package]

California soul by Ubiquity Records

Ubiquity Records kicks major ass when it comes to fusing good design with good music. Anyone can put out a tee but selecting the right shirt and colors is what separates the boys from the men. Ubiquity always takes it up a notch and for that I’m a loyal supporter. Case in point, this classic music-inspired jersey crew neck tee. It’s 100% cotton and fitted to perfection. I gotta pick one of these up pronto.

Do you upcycle? It’s fun.

Let’s face it – sometimes you have to retire a favorite pair of kicks or clothing. It’s just looking ragged or it’s going to send you to the podiatrist. But if that item is too memorable to part with, you don’t have to chuck it. Just use a part of it to make something new and you’ll score major Earth Day karma points in the process. TOMS Shoes had an awesome newsletter email today dishing some ideas on what their shoes can be, but the possibilities are endless and can actually turn out to be pretty cool. It’s another opportunity to work that creative mind of yours.

This koozie rocks!

F*ck all the naysayers, life is good. So treat yourself to a brand-new koozie that lets all your offline (real) friends know just how you feel. $7.50 on Print Liberation.

Food as good as the design

It’s Earth Day and one way I like celebrating is to support local, independent businesses. If you happen to be in Charleston, South Carolina, I highly recommend checking out FIG (Food Is Good). And if not, check out their gorgeous, newly refreshed brand identity by Stitch Design Co. I love a good neighborhood joint that not only gets good food but also good design.
