One girl, one dress, one year, and infinite reasons why this project is great.

I remember how much I hated school uniforms because I didn’t really get to go on “back to school” shopping sprees, but when I discovered The Uniform Project, I was blown away! The objective was simple: one girl exercises sustainable fashion for an entire year by wearing one dress that’s decked out differently each day with recycled jewelry and other accessories. The result: a stylish and unique outfit for every day of the year! The project was also a fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a movement that donates money to fund uniforms and educational expenses for kids living in Indian slums. The project started in May 2009 and  just finished this month, raising a total of $80,579 in donations. Check out the video below to watch a photo slideshow of every outfit worn starting from Day 1! The project is on a break for now, but I look forward to finding out what’s next.

Not only is this a terrific idea – the Akansksha Foundation is making a real difference in the lives of thousands of Indian girls every day.

Way to go! I bet that was a lot of hard work, but it will definitely have a huge impact on these kids. I’m definitely inspired by this.

For those who want to know what great song you are hearing: The The – this is the day

  10. Daniele Says:

This is soooo inspiring and so cute! I would wear every single one of those.. Hope the project keeps going! :D

  11. meilinPR Says:

Misleading. Yes, she uses the same dress every day, BUT she wears other clothing on top of/below it. See Day 26 (0:44) for a good example. The idea is great, but since when do shorts and a shirt count as “accesories”? I would love to see someone do this right.

meilinPR, get over yourself. this young woman did something terrific and inspiring – celebrate her and all that she accomplished! 365 is a lot of one single dress and she did great.

Really cool idea and great return! I wish I had even 1/4th of her creativity to keep that dress looking like a new outfit every day!

[...] Yes, yes, yes! You have stumbled upon a beauty blog showcasing before and after hair and makeup photos along with wedding photos with styling done by our team.  However, I have recently fell into this site featuring a project called The Uniform Project.  At first glance, it seemed easily dismissible, however, after reading the content for a bit I must say that it was rather striking and interesting so I’ve decided to share The Uniform Project with our readers.  Here is a repost from Holiday Matinee (with the original here): [...]

    Wow.

It would cost a ton of money to get all the different colours of tights she wears at the very least – you can’t get used tights, and a good pair is about $20. Plus they wear out often so you have to replace them…. I don’t know. This looks like it would cost me about as much as a regular wardrobe. Even if all the belts and jackets and sweaters and accessories cost $5-10 each, it adds up… This was a cool project, but it’s more about creativity and individualism than it is about frugality.

  24. Billy Says:

That dress must have really stunk at the end of the project.

  25. Gabrielle Says:

    This is fantastic!

… But were you inspired by the project called little brown dress (2005) http://www.littlebrowndress.com/.

If so, you should credit it on your site.

On another note I really enjoy the creativity injected in the outfits although I must agree with the other readers that state this is much more about fashion than frugality.

It would be interesting to find out how much money you spent and the accessories!

  26. Inga Says:

I have been following the Uniform Project a little. If you actually read the ‘credits’ next to each outfit you will see that most stuff is donated or bought of Ebay.

The tights were donated by the company that makes them, this is also mentioned in the site.

For the record the point of the site is to raise money for schooling in India, which has been pointed out. Get over your complaining because it is not exactly how you would like it done! She and those who helped her have raised alot of money for this charity. If you don’t like how she did it, do the project yourself and see how successful you are.

Oh, and she had 7 of the same dress, so she could wash it etc. So no stinky dirty dress that she had to wear for a year.

  27. Ilse Says:

Wow, some of the outfits didn’t even looked like a dress, you are really creative.
I just don’t understand how the project is done, could you explain me? (:

  28. Bear Says:

The amount of clothes that she wore with that dress eliminates the point of only wearing one dress. The display just showed that you can do a lot with one piece, not that you don’t need many clothes. I can’t imagine how many extra clothes she had to buy just so that she didn’t wear the same outfit twice. On top of that, she’s super cute, and many of the outfits she wore would not look good on different body shapes.

  29. taylor Says:

the clothes were D O N A T E D. for the last time, jeez. it’s not that complicated. she did something truly amazing and for an outstanding cause. if you could look half as good as her in those outfits, i’d be surprised @Bear.. get over yourself.

  30. Zain Says:

If the main aim is for charity then it’s a noble cause. It’s a great way to give back something to the society.

  33. pearly Says:

i wonder what she was wearing while doing laundry…

  34. Felecia Says:

    Very creative and cool idea.

  35. Burrburr Says:

She probably ended up spending more money on the accessories than she would have if she just bought other clothes to wear. That and she’d have to do laundry every day. Noble cause, but terribly inefficient.

  36. Leslie Says:

Maybe this will change the views of all the nay sayers regarding school uniforms.

  37. Glenn Says:

This is ridiculous. I agree with BurrBurr, all the accessories featured in the video surely cost at least as much as buying different outfits if not more. fail

  38. Stacey Says:

I am once again disappointed by the cynical people who feel it necessary to find flaws in the efforts of those who use their creativity and good nature to give back to others. Firstly, the details of her project are on the website (for example, donated tights, recycled jewelry, second hand accessories, etc). If you want to find something to judge then at least come prepared with a reasonably intelligent argument. Secondly, what have you done to raise money or awareness about a cause that is important to your heart?! This was not about selfish frugality! Instead of being ignorant and judgmental, why don’t you get up and do something meaningful yourself!

  39. vBulletin Services Says:

This is really a good project and i hope to see it coming up year.

  40. Gretta Says:

I’ve seen similar projects to this done but without a cause and I think this is the best version. The dress is outrageously cute to begin with which is great. I think it is fantastic to know that in reality we care so much more about ourselves than other people do. I did something like this for a week and nobody even noticed (or at least never said anything) that I was wearing the same item every week. Goes to show that we are much more vain about ourselves than judgemental about others. Boy she has a lot of colored pairs of tights!
