A brown paper bag with a sense of humor

My friend Niamh is right, good humor should be implemented in marketing initiatives more often. It’s a great tool for allowing us to relate to brands and reevaluate our purchasing decisions in a comfortable manner. Too often, brands assume consumers to be stupid, yet, it’s the ones who are crafty, creative and full of wit that succeed.

Do you miss slamming down the phone when you hang up?

Hooking up my cell phone to a handset when I’m home is actually something I’ve looked into before – I just couldn’t find a worthy solution. Well, wouldn’t you know it, Freelandstudios is doing it better on Etsy with their iRetrophone. It looks great, accommodates sync + charge functions and makes phone calls more of a big deal. I also don’t mind less exposure to radiation. I think we can all agree cancer sucks.

365 days of snail mail love with ‘Postcards To My Parents’

Giving one handmade greeting card is rewarding for both parties, but what about 365? That’s just what Carolyn Sewell had in mind with Postcards To My Parents, a project that one-upped every gift idea I’ve ever had. In celebration of their anniversary, Carolyn mailed her parents a hand-drawn postcard each day for one whole year. Messages ranged from funny phrases and memorable quotes to simple equations and timeless debates. I’m keeping my digits crossed that she follows through with her suggestive tweet, because I would like to see this creative idea blossom. And for the record, I wouldn’t mind if it rained tater tots either.

Holiday Matinee’s October Mixtape!

It’s amazing how it feels when a live show gets you hooked and if you’ve been following us the last few days, it’s no surprise who totally impressed us (if not see first song on this mix). This month we’ve got new Belle & Sebastian, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Toro Y Moi’s alter ego Les Sins and more. Make a promise to yourself to go out and see more live shows. Discovery is the best.

An event where you can consume free food and the opinions of creative people

Future:Content, a conference curated by It’s Nice That, has a lot more going for itself than free breakfast, lunch, and drinks. At this one-day event in London, a variety of creative industry specialists express their opinions and conversation is stirred amongst audience members. It sounds like any other typical conference, but considering that this event is being run by a great resource for discovering some new designers and studios that create truly great work and none of that vintage-photo-with-Helvetica-words nonsense, I would definitely be excited about being a member of the audience.

Setting a soundtrack to your thoughts

People enjoy websites like PostSecret because it’s a glimpse into the way other people live; a stranger’s innermost thoughts can make you feel less alone. One Hello World is a digital version of this — you call, leave a message, and an anonymous person in Kansas sets those voicemails to music. I encourage you to try it (I did!) and listen to some messages on the site. They are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but almost always intriguing and beautiful.

Digging Motown with Mayer Hawthorne

I gotta say, I went to the show last night for Childish Gambino and had no intentions of ruining my Donald Glover high with any other bands. But HOLY CRAP, Mayer Hawthorne and The County came on stage, wearing their Rydell High red sweaters and belted out 60 minutes of Motown meets hip-hop meets sex jam meets doo-wop. The Motor City native brought the party to NYC and you couldn’t help but brush up to the pack of girls dancing in front of you. This cat is the real deal and if you wanna get down, well now you know.
