You gots to chill

Big ups to our buddy Lucas for posting this gem of a music video on Facebook. But also thank you Toro Y Moi (Chaz Bundick) for releasing this super-chill track off the upcoming Underneath the Pine (February 22 on Carpark Records). Is anyone else waiting in anticipation after hearing this?

Toro Y Moi – Still Sound

I work because I love this shit!

When you find that thing you love to do and it doesn’t even feel like work, well my friends, this is what it’s all about. Stay strong and keep making. [via TDP]

Japan is so weird and I love it

Austin is known for keeping it weird, but I don’t think Japan is in danger of losing its title anytime soon. [via Japan Is Weird]

Have you hugged your dreams today?

Living your dreams is rad, but encouraging others to do so with your clothing is even better (insert shameless plug here). Last weekend, I came across MNKR (short for ‘moniker’) at the Renegade Craft Holiday Fair and obviously made a beeline for the booth. Their shop is filled with clever tees for guys and gals that pay tribute to anything from 2Pac to tacos, and I dig it. In 2006, founders dreamers Matt and Kandace quit Nordstrom day jobs to pursue their creative ideas without limitation, and look how well it’s going for them! If you live in San Francisco, make sure to stop by Renegade on Saturday or Sunday (12/18-19) to hug it out with MNKR and lots of other indie talent.

Oh, the places you’ll go with an artistic globe!

These whimsical globes call for a Dr. Seuss-inspired post:

Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re finding out about ImagineNations on Holiday Matinee! Vintage globes decoupaged by hand, inspiring travel to faraway lands. Artist Wendy Gold lets you custom design (oh how I wish the Peace globe was mine!). So what are you waiting for? Today’s the day! Your globe is waiting. So… order away!

Artisanal pencil sharpening: No, this is not a joke.

Does anyone use yellow pencils anymore? I can’t remember the last time I used a pencil at all, let alone one that required sharpening. But no matter. David Rees still wants to sharpen your pencils. Literally.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he explains why he pursued this career path: “When I was working for the 2010 census, we were each issued No. 2 pencils and a manual sharpener. We all sharpened our pencils on the first day of training, and I was like, ‘I’m feeling this. This rules. I like sharpening pencils.’ It had been a while since I had done it. And the more I thought about it, the more I was like, ‘If I could figure out how to get paid to sharpen pencils, I would be happy.’ So I decided to become an artisanal pencil sharpener.”

If that’s not working your love then I don’t know what is. So why not let him lovingly sharpen a pencil for you by hand? You’ll even get a little bag of the shavings with your order. Oh, and, every pencil David Rees sharpens is shipped with a certificate authenticating that it is now a dangerous object. True story.

Holiday Matinee’s December Mixtape!

This month’s mix isn’t flush with Christmas music (you’ve read how we got our name) but we will kick it off with some since it’s just too damn good of a song. Besides that, there’s plenty to sample including Strange Talk, Paul Simon, Tennis and our main man Mayer Hawthorne who’ll have you snapping your fingers and tapping those feet. Resist the urge and start a dance party in your office instead!
