Competition isn’t just for football players

As many of you gear up for the Super Bowl on Sunday, this video should serve as a reminder that sports aren’t just for frat boys athletes. The Hipster Olympics is just your average competition to see who can be the most hipster without trying, where participation is “strictly ironic.” So what if the video was made in 2007? Making fun of hipsters is timeless.

Every rider’s got a story to tell.

The wind racing through your hair, heart beating faster. The sights and sounds of the streets you fly down. Just you, two wheels, and your thoughts. Nothing else seems to matter because it’s all about the ride. If you share my velobsession, then you’re going to be totally spoked on The Ride Journal. It’s a medley of fascinating stories from passionate cyclists all over the world, and I can’t. get. enough. From Critical Mess and missed cycling connections to touring and track racing, there’s a little somethin’ somethin’ in here for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you enjoy getting muddy in the mountains, cruising along the beach, or playing polo on a fixie, nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride. Take a gander at issues one and two, and see how long it takes to ditch the processor for your pedals.

Have you considered putting a bird on it?

Yup, Portlandia pretty much nails the indie-crafter stereotype here. Technology Loop is also a hilarious reminder that disconnecting isn’t the worst idea either. Wait, I’m going to have to end this post right here – you straight up got dust right in my eyes.

I’m never looking at my old Barbies the same way again

I’ve hacked off the heads of my old dolls when I was little, but Mariel Clayton’s work goes beyond that to reveal a man-hating, debaucherous Barbie that is ruining my childhood one photo at a time.

Save the money or cash in?

It’s never too late. What do you think will be your tipping point?

You’re only selling out if…

Think back to all the things you wanted to be growing up or over the course of your life. I did and asked each of our writers to do the same. Dave, a teacher. Hannah, a chocolatier. Catrina, a mythologist. Monique, a keyboardist. Myself, an anchorman (and this was long before Ron Burgundy). You can see our complete list here and it gets pretty interesting.

But it reminds me of an episode of The Wonder Years where Kevin takes piano lessons and looking back remarks:

“When you’re a little kid you’re a bit of everything: scientist, philosopher, artist. Sometimes it seems like growing up is giving these things up one at a time.”

Thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way where you raise the white flag and give up on doing the things you love or even the things you’d like to try. And if you’re doing them out of love, does it really even matter that it’s not your day job? You might be able to have it be that way someday, but you can still get the enjoyment from an activity by practicing it in your free time. And it’s easy! Dave can easily get his fix for teaching by speaking at classes. Hannah can satiate her desire for creative chocolates by going to a workshop. Just apply it to your situation.

I think a lot of us have a fear of selling out, but having a job to pay bills and live comfortably isn’t selling out. You’re only selling out if you quit making time for enjoying the things you love. So I encourage you, make a list of all the things you want(ed) to be. If there’s still stuff on there that makes you feel alive, find a way to experience it whether it’s taking a class, reading about it or joining a group. You’ll never be a sell-out so long as you don’t ignore your feelings and keep exploring.

Who knew extension cords could be so cool?

I really love it when designers tackle mundane products and turn them into something useful. That something is the extension cord and it’s now a product you don’t need to hide thanks to Multi Lines. They come in several color options and connect to one another as far as you need electricity. I will definitely be ordering one, or five. Click the photo to do the same. [Thanks to HC for the tip!]
