Art is a weapon for change

If film is the ultimate art form, or at least a vehicle for showcasing all types, I can really get behind Breadtruck Films and Jeff Durkin’s Kickstarter-funded documentary Art As A Weapon. The art film/political documentary is focused on raising awareness about the Burmese struggles for human rights through a dialogue with Western artists like Shepard Fairey. This project is yet another awesome example of how we can provoke change by speaking with our dollar. Money might not be the root of all evil, but rather how we spend it. If you’re interested in funding the project, check out the Kickstarter page and the different rewards for participation, not least of which could be bettering many people’s quality of life.

Louis CK is one of only a handful of comics that totally crack me up. His take on society’s current obsession with technology is so spot on. Watch this clip from Conan and then let’s all agree to put down our phones, at least long enough to remind ourselves life is best experienced offline.

I can only speak for myself here, but I think this video of scenes from the movie Breakin’ set to Neon Indian’s Polish Girl is pretty rad in every sense of the word. How does it not make you smile?

Having had the pleasure of visiting Mast Brothers in Williamsburg, I can say first hand how amazing their entire brand is. And yes, I say brand because each piece of chocolate is complimented by such slick package design and presentation, it’s impossible not to notice the dedication these guys have for their craft. Each bar offers its own story of flavors, and no two are exactly alike. As if you needed another reason to fall in love with chocolate.

Film makers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert combine dogs and skateboarding to create this adorable little film. I love it and it doesn’t even include cats! Don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the making of this film.

The story behind these peSeta caps is pretty romantic. Bike meets sewing machine. Bike and sewing machine fall in love. Together, they create some pretty cool cycling caps for New Museum. Yessir, I’m adding this to the list of things I totally heart about Spain.

Ah, the awkward sexual moment…best done in a British accent if you ask me. Alright, this is beyond awkward, but Peep Show is just an amazingly funny show. “This is possibly the most exciting thing that has happened to anyone ever.”

I wish I went to a British secondary school

I may have never heard of this show if it weren’t for a British Airways flight, but after a second run through the series, The Inbetweeners is quite possibly the funniest show I’ve ever seen. It’s a crude British series about four high school friends that go through embarrassing situations like none other and this clip right here would be considered tame in comparison to some of the things that go down. While it’s a little disappointing to hear it’s being adapted for a US audience like The Office, I can’t wait for the movie and two specials that are slated to begin this summer.

If “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” came out this year instead of my birth year (1986, thank you very much), would hipsters flock in droves to see it? What if the movie trailer portrayed it as a coming-of-age, quirky (and perhaps, at times, dark) indie flick like that of Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides”? Bring a little Hollywood into your home

It might be a week late for a witty, Oscars-inspired offhand remark, but it’s always a good time for retro movie posters. Self-proclaimed film fanatic Claudia Varosio has dedicated her Etsy shop to just that: illustrated cinema posters infused with a hint of vintage. Her tastes range from classics (like Singin’ in the Rain) to cult (Donnie Darko) and everything in between. My favorite posters are the ones that feature a small detail from the movie (who remembers the penguin reference in Fight Club?) — although I was sold on the simple, colorful designs from the start. Did I mention that most of the posters are in the $20 range? Done and done.

Have you considered putting a bird on it?

Yup, Portlandia pretty much nails the indie-crafter stereotype here. Technology Loop is also a hilarious reminder that disconnecting isn’t the worst idea either. Wait, I’m going to have to end this post right here – you straight up got dust right in my eyes.
